District 113A Board Appoints New Superintendent

The District 113A school board unanimously approved a three-year contract Wednesday night with Susan Birkenmaier, the current director of operations for LaGrange Highlands School District 106.

The  Board of Education unanimously approved Wednesday night the appointment of Susan Birkenmaier as the district's next superintendent, effective July 1.

Birkenmaier is currently serving as the director of operations for LaGrange Highlands School District 106, where she is responsible for district finances and human services.

"It is a special privilege to be appointed superintendent," Birkenmeier said Wednesday. "Through the whole interview process, every person I met truly exemplified an enthusiam for doing the very best for the kids in their education. You have beautiful schools, enthusiastic teachers and happy kids."

The District 113A board approved a three-year contract with Birkenmaier at an annual salary of $164,000. Board Member Kevin Doherty was absent, and Board Member Lisa Wright participated via conference call.

"We're very excited to have (Birkenmaier) on board," Board President Mike Aurelio said during the meeting. "We look forward to several years of working together, improving and moving forward."

Birkenmaier's appointment comes five months after former Superintendent Tim Ricker at the end of the 2011-12 school year. He after it was revealed that District 113A owes the state more than $328,956 for unallowable transportation reimbursements received for the 2008-09 school year.

Since Ricker's official departure Dec. 31, District 113A has been under the direction of Assistant Superintendent Mary Gricus and the district's administrative team.

In January, to serve in a part-time capacity through June 30. 

Birkenmaier will officially assume her position July 1.
