LEMONT, IL—A Lemont teen is one of only 84 high school students from from across the country to have recently been selected as a participant in the 16th annual GRAMMY Camp® program. Julia Marshall, a 16-year-old student from Lemont who attends Benet Academy, said she is looking forward to the opportunity to hone her skills in the music industry.

"When I found out about being accepted into GRAMMY Camp, I was so excited and almost couldn’t believe it," Marshall told Patch. "They only accept eight students from across the country for the music business program, so I was surprised and honored to be chosen. This has been something I’ve strived toward for a while and it seemed perfect for me, so I was thrilled to get the news."

GRAMMY Camp has historically taken place in Los Angeles as a five-day summer music experience. This year, in light of COVID-19, GRAMMY Camp will be a virtual interactive experience via digital conferencing. Focusing on all aspects of commercial music, this unique opportunity provides instruction by industry professionals in an immersive, creative online environment.

Kat Cunning, Moon Taxi, OK GO, Tim Lopez and Tom Higgenson from Plain White T's, and Bryce Vine will be this year's guest artists; they will discuss their career paths and help students prepare for the music industry. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the camp will be held virtually for the first time from Tuesday, July 14 – Saturday, July 18.

"I am looking forward to meeting with professionals in my field of interest and hearing their advice for how to be successful in the music business and also experiencing the first-ever online Grammy Camp. And of course I’m looking forward to meeting the Plain White T’s!" she said.

Marshall said her love for music began at the tender age of three. Her grandfather started teaching her how to play the guitar as a small child. She eventually started taking formal piano lessons at age five and then picked up guitar at age 8 and voice lessons at age 11.

"I’ve always loved singing and music, but another main interest of mine is in the marketing and business side of the music industry. I’ve been exploring marketing and business since I started my own handmade bath and body products business with my sister about four years ago, and it’s something I really enjoy. Combining this with music puts together two of the things I love to do most."

According to Marshall, after completing high school she plans to double major in business/marketing and music in college.

"I would love to get a degree in business because I find that to be very versatile and applicable to being a record executive, which is what I want for my future. I also want to study music because it is an integral part of my life and invaluable for working in any part of the music industry," she said.
