[December, Lisle IL] — Coach Gene Heidkamp became Benet’s winningest boys basketball
coach when he broke Coach Bill Geists’ record with his 368th career win. His record now sits
at 370-96.
Gene began his coaching career at Benet in the 2008-2009 season. Over his 15 seasons with
the Redwings he has won 6 conference titles, 9 regional titles, 5 sectional and 3 super
sectional titles and played in the state championship game 3 times in 2014, 2016 and 2023.
In the 2022-2023 season the team set the school record for a boys team finishing the season
35-2.
But wins and losses are not what’s most important to Coach Heidkamp. “The basketball
tradition at Benet is special. It’s been an absolute privilege to follow the great coaches that
have built this program. The relationships with the players and assistant coaches have made
this an unbelievable experience for me. I feel very fortunate to be the coach here at
Benet.”
Athletic Director, Scott Lawler agrees “Benet is blessed to have a coach like Gene at our
school. Not only is he an outstanding basketball coach, but an even better person. He
represents the mission of the school in his teaching, coaching, and his faith. I think everyone
in the Benet community could not be happier for Gene becoming the winningest boys
basketball coach because he is easy to root for as a coach and person. Class act coach!”
Benet Academy, founded in 1837 and located in Lisle, IL, is an independent Catholic,
college preparatory high school in the Benedictine tradition. Benet’s mission is to provide a
disciplined educational environment that fosters the on-going religious, intellectual and
social development of its students.
