Manhattan American Legion Post Plans Memorial Day Ceremonies

The ceremonies are scheduled to take place at seven cemeteries throughout Manhattan and Elwood.

MANHATTAN, IL — The Manhattan American Legion Post 935 is scheduled to make stops at seven cemeteries throughout Manhattan and Elwood on Memorial Day, May 30.

During the ceremonies, the American Legion's chaplain will read "Flanders Field" and recite the "Pledge of Allegiance," according to American Legion Post 935 Vice Commander Jim Romain.

Members of the American Legion will fire off a seven-gun salute during each stop, Romain said.

The American Legion at the Memorial Stone ceremony will read off names of veterans who have died within the past year, Romain said.

Members of the Lincoln-Way West JROTC will join the American Legion at some of the stops, Romain said.

The schedule for Memorial Day is:

  • 8:30 a.m. - Maple Hill Cemetery, 21301 W. Mississippi St. in Elwood.
  • 8:50 a.m. - Brown Cemetery, 25257 S. Chicago Road in Elwood.
  • 9:15 a.m. - North Providence Ridge Cemetery, 23950 S. Ridge Road in Elwood.
  • 9:40 a.m. - St. Joseph Cemetery, Manhattan/Arsenal Road and U.S. Route 52 Manhattan.
  • 10 a.m. - Memorial Stone, 230 S. State St. in Manhattan.
  • 10:35 a.m. - Manhattan Center Cemetery, 25410 S. Cedar Road in Manhattan.
  • 11 a.m. - Wilton Center Cemetery and Mount St. Patrick Cemetery (Formerly Mount Calvary Cemetery), 29890 S. Cedar Road in Manhattan.
