Resident-Only Parking Coming To Area In Downtown Mokena

The Village of Mokena Board of Trustees approved at its Monday meeting the restrictions on parts of McGovney Street and Mokena Street.

MOKENA, IL — Out of town visitors to downtown Mokena will need to be careful where they park now that the Village of Mokena Board of Trustees passed a revised parking ordinance.

The board voted unanimously at its Monday meeting to approve the new parking rules, which establishes "resident parking only" from the 11000 block of McGovney Street to Mokena Street, and from the Mokena Street/McGovney Street intersection to Denny Avenue, according to Village documents.

The revised parking ordinance was part of the board's consent agenda, and there was no public discussion among board members prior to the vote about the ordinance or where it would be in effect.

The new parking rules will take effect 30 days after the ordinance has been publicized and street signs are posted in the area, according to Mokena Police Interim Chief Brian Benton.

The will be a $25 fine for those who violate the new parking rules, Benton told Patch via email.

There are also "resident parking only" restrictions near some of Mokena's parks, such as Grasmere and Foxborough, according to Benton.

Trustee George Metanias again filled in as mayor pro tempore for Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer, who has not been present at a board meeting since suffering injuries related to a fall at his home Feb. 11 and later undergoing a previously planned procedure.

The Village last issued an update on Fleischer March 24. At that time, the Village said Fleischer was "resting comfortably and recovering. The mayor anticipates returning to a regular work schedule as soon as possible. He and his family thank the Mokena community for their continued support."
