Did I Miss Something? Didn't Think So

Friday's wedding may have been history in the making. I chose to sleep in.

I slept in Friday morning. Did I miss anything?

I was considering getting up to live blog about that major event that was happening across the pond. You know, the “Royal Wedding.” But to be honest, I never was all that excited about it the whole thing to begin with.

I made a last minute decision to bale on getting up at 3 a.m. to watch bleary eyed an event that has little significance in anyone’s life except maybe the couple and their family.

Typically, I start my day watching the ''Today'' show and for months they have been going on and on and on about this wedding. They talked about it so much that any interest I may have had was quashed.

In more recent days whenever they talked about the wedding, which was often, I started changing the channel or just tuning it out.

Personally, I never received an invitation, so why should I care? Hundreds of people just lost their lives in tornadoes across the south, yet the Royal Wedding manages to take precedence.

I guess it’s all about priorities.

When I was a kid, I think I was in sixth grade when Princess Diana married Prince Charles. My mother and I woke up early and while lounging in bed we watched the wedding, but aside from the long train, the dress’ puffy sleeves and maybe that kiss on the balcony, I don’t remember much else.

At the time I was so excited, because little girls dream of being a princess and marrying a handsome prince. Prince Charles, well, I didn’t get why Diana would marry him.

Other than his title, he didn’t seem to have much to recommend him. In retrospect, I think I was a pretty smart kid, because it appears that he was a bit of a royal pain.

Kate and William are a cute couple. I wish them well. I just don't get all of the hype. Maybe it's the pageantry of it all that can suck us in.

Yet there were so many useless and pointless questions posed prior to the actual event: What would she wear? Who would design the dress? Would it rain? Who would be invited? Was Kanye going? Really?

I wonder how many wasted hours people spent worrying about a couple they will never meet in their lifetime. Life is short and I have enough to do as it is, I don’t need to worry about Catherine and Wills.

Yes, it is a historical event. And it is very romantic, but viewing parties? Why?

If you did get up early and watch, good for you. I bet you enjoyed every minute of it. You oohed and aahed and criticized or complimented. I wouldn’t assume your life would be any better for waking up early on April 29, 2011. But, you were part of history. You can tell your grandkids about it one day if you want. Not that they will care.

I missed the walk down the aisle and all that other good stuff. But, I’m sure—thanks to "Today" and all of the other TV media—I’ll be able to see enough recaps to more than satisfy any slight interest I might still have. Slight.

So, when I woke up Friday the sun was shining and a new day had dawned. I had missed the Royal Wedding and felt much better for it.
