US Post Office Backs Off Plan to End Saturday Delivery

A Congressional resolution prohibits the plan, despite the financial burden on the US Postal Service.

The plan to stop regular Saturday mail delivery was slated to begin Aug. 5, but language in a Congressional resolution prohibits implementation.

The United States Postal Service Board of Governors says in an April 10 press release that the inability to cut services leaves the agency balancing a heavy financial burden.

The Board intends to press for legislative changes that will allow the agency to reduce costs. "The Board continues to support the transition to a new national delivery schedule. Such a transition will generate approximately $2 billion in annual cost savings and is a necessary part of a larger five-year business plan to restore the Postal Service to long-term financial stability," said media spokesperson David Partenheimer.

The Board has no choice but to follow the law, and officials have directed the Postal Service to delay the plan until legislation "provides the Postal Service with the authority to implement a financially appropriate and responsible delivery schedule," he said.
