Broken sewer pipe forces detours in the days ahead

City of Peoria Public Works crews will soon be repairing a storm sewer line and pavement on West Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. A 12-inch clay sewer pipe broke, washing out the street’s storm sewer and causing the subbase to erode creating a large hole in the road. Workers will have to remove a section of the pavement to determine the severity of the damage.

“This job is an example of the need for proactive routine maintenance,” said Sie Maroon, Deputy Director of Operations. “Routine maintenance allows our crews to actively perform repairs that are more cost-effective than complete reconstruction.”

The broken pipe will be replaced with a more durable PVC line and the pavement will be replaced with concrete and asphalt. The project will utilize Stormwater Utility Dollars and should be complete by Friday, September 4, weather pending.
