PLAINFIELD, IL — The building that housed Plainfield's Walmart Supercenter until its abrupt closure in March 2023 has sold, according to Mayor John Argoudelis.

In its place will become a "home decor showroom and warehouse," the mayor told Patch on Thursday. The business, at 12690 S. Route 59, will sell "everything for the interior of your home," from furniture to kitchen buildouts.

The mayor did not reveal what brand would take over the space but said the company has another site in Chicago. The Plainfield location will be "a new and expanded suburban site."

"I was very impressed with the individuals involved," Argoudelis said. "They're very successful businesspeople and know what they're doing. ... There's a great marketplace for what they are bringing."

The decision to close the supercenter came after Walmart evaluated thousands of stores nationwide, determining the Plainfield location "hasn't performed as well as we'd hoped," Patch reported.

"Everything is getting replaced with something that's doing very well in the marketplace," Argoudelis said. "It has nothing to do with the fundamentals of Plainfield being attractive to retailers."

The new owners, who finalized the sale about a month ago, are still in the process of putting together their business plan, and the name of the store is still being figured out, Argoudelis said. The company has another site in Chicago, and the Plainfield location will serve as "a new and expanded suburban site."

"It's not a well-known brand name, like Wayfair," he said.

Argoudelis said he expects plans to go before the Village Board after the holidays.

"We're very active and proactive helping this transition happen as quickly as possible with quality end users that can serve our community," the mayor said.
