Mental Health Emergency Calls On The Rise Since 2023: Plainfield Fire Department

Since 2023, the Plainfield Fire Protection District has responded to more than 900 calls for mental health emergencies, officials said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Fire Protection District has seen a rise in 911 calls about mental health emergencies since 2023, officials said Monday.

In the past two and a half years, crews have responded to 904 mental health emergencies, 108 overdose calls and 73 suicide-related calls, according to a Facebook post from the department.

In an effort to raise awareness of mental health in the community, fire officials shared resources to remind residents that help is available.

"If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that there are local services and resources, many of which are free or offered at reduced cost for residents," officials wrote.

For Plainfield Township residents, the local municipality offers free counseling services through a third-party provider. Locals should call 815-436-8308 to get started.

Will County residents have access to psychiatric and medication management, therapy, a behavioral health injection clinic, medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol addictions, and mobile crisis response for at-risk youth through the Will County Health Department. For Kendall County residents, the Kendall County Health Department provides therapy, psychiatric services and substance abuse treatment.

Anyone who needs immediate help should call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. The program is offered around the clock. Someone experiencing an emergency should call or text 911.
