Plainfield Gas Prices Dip In Time For Labor Day Weekend Travel

September means cheaper winter-blend gasoline is almost at the pumps, helping take the pressure off gas prices, AAA said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield drivers are getting ready to enjoy the last moments of summer this Labor Day weekend, and they're in luck because gas prices are significantly lower than they were a year ago.

The national gas price average sits at $3.36, which is 14 cents less than a month ago and 46 cents less than a year ago. The average in Illinois is $3.69, while in Will County, the average increases to $3.77.

A year ago, the average gallon of gas cost $4.07 in Illinois. Prices soared even a month ago, sitting at an average of $4.03 in the state.

"The arrival of September means cheaper winter-blend gasoline is almost here, which always helps take pressure off pump prices," Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, said in a statement.

Roads will be jam-packed throughout Labor Day weekend, AAA said, with the busiest days expected to be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, according to data from INRIX.

“Drivers should expect the most severe traffic jams before the holiday weekend as commuters mix with travelers,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Monitoring traffic apps, local news stations, and 511 traveler information services may help drivers navigate around congestion and reduce driver frustration this Labor Day.”

  • Shell, 11900 S. Route 59: $3.81 per gallon
