Poetry Slam to Bring Together Voices from Across the Region

Where voices gather, stories bloom — a celebration of spirit, spoken word, and shared humanity

Plainfield, IL — A celebration of spoken word, creativity, and community is set to take center stage at Plainfield Central High School on Friday, June 20, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM — and organizers are inviting people of all ages and from all towns to be part of this powerful Poetry Slam.

Sponsored by The Plainfield Community Alliance, AMAN (American Muslims Assisting Neighbors), and Young Lions Roar, the event welcomes poets and poetry lovers from across the region to share their original work, connect through creativity, and celebrate the diverse stories that shape our communities.

“This event isn’t just for Plainfield — it’s for everyone,” said Mohammed Faheem, President of AMAN and founder of the Plainfield Community Alliance. “We’re inviting voices from all neighborhoods, backgrounds, and generations to join us in building something beautiful through the power of words.”

This Free Poetry Slam will feature an open mic format, encouraging participation from both first-time performers and seasoned writers. Attendees can expect an inspiring range of performances, reflecting personal journeys, social issues, and the human experience.

Organizers emphasize that the event is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive space where people from surrounding towns and cities can come together to uplift and be uplifted.

“Whether you're from Joliet, Bolingbrook, Aurora, Naperville, Romeoville — or anywhere in between — this is your invitation to step up to the mic or simply come and listen,” said Aubrey Barnes from Young Lions Roar. “This is about building a regional community through shared expression.”

The event will be held at Plainfield Central High School, located at 24120 W Fort Beggs Drive, and will run from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Friday, June 20.
