Hazardous, Icy Road Conditions: IL State Police Issue Warning

ILLINOIS — The National Weather Service is warning motorists to be extra cautious Thursday morning as roads remain slick and icy in many areas. Sub-freezing temperatures Wednesday night mean the ground remains cold, with rain and sleet contributing to treacherous roadways.

The NWS said rain and sleet are expected to continue for several hours Thursday morning.

The NWS said it has received reports of numerous accidents, and drivers are urged to use caution, particularly in areas where it is raining.

Illinois State Police issued an alert just after 9:30 a.m. warning drivers of hazardous road conditions, saying, "Please be advised that the roadways, especially on overpasses and bridges, are very slippery. Please use extreme caution while traveling today. IDOT crews were out salting the roadways, state police said.

Heavy rainfall expected late this week has also prompted a flood watch for counties including Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall and Will.
