Sisters Honor Brother’s Memory Through Platelet Donation

After losing their brother to colon cancer, twin sisters honor his life by giving back through platelet donation at Vitalant.

This week marks 14 years since twin sisters Linda Markese and Laura Diaz lost their brother, Eric Oleksy, to colon cancer at just 37 years old. A devoted father of two from Plainfield, Eric was diagnosed at 32 and received blood and platelet transfusions during his treatment, allowing his family to spend more time with him.

Now, Linda and Laura are keeping his memory alive by giving back through platelet donation. Both women are regular donors with Vitalant, and this week, the sisters rolled up their sleeve to donate platelets in Eric’s honor.

“The small moment it takes to donate is nothing compared to the lifetime someone gains from it,” Linda said. “My twin and I stood together in his last days—now, together, we give so others can have more tomorrows.”

For Linda, who works for Vitalant, the experience is both personal and inspiring. She hopes her family’s story encourages others to make time to donate.

“Every unit of blood or platelets can make a real difference for someone fighting to live,” she said. “Eric’s story is a reminder that you never know whose tomorrow you’re helping to create.”
