PLAINFIELD, IL — A new restaurant will take over the vacant space once occupied by Larry's Diner, Mayor John Argoudelis told Patch.

Sushi Uni will open at 24522 W. Lockport St., promising to "return this spot to its former popularity," according to the mayor. Argoudelis posited that the Japanese restaurant will likely open sometime next year.

Larry's Diner closed in May 2023 after first opening in 2000. Investors purchased the building last fall, and in March, a fire broke out at the building, causing more than $200,000 in damage, Patch reported. Arson charges were filed against two 14-year-olds.

"[Sushi Uni owners] bought the building, then it caught on fire, so they were deciding whether they wanted to move forward, knocking it down or remodelling the existing building," Argoudelis said. "They're doing the latter."

Plainfield's Sushi Uni will be the second in the Midwest. The owners also operate a location outside of Kansas City, Missouri.

"They wanted a presence in the Chicago area and found this and thought it was the right spot for them," Argoudelis said.

The owner of Sushi Uni and contractor, Capitol Construction, donated the old Larry’s Diner sign to the Plainfield Historical Society, where staff will restore it

"All of these memories [associated with Larry's Diner] promise to be resurrected when we see that old sign on display," Argoudelis wrote in a Facebook post.
