1 Killed, 1 Injured In I-55 Crash In Will County: Police

The crash involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial vehicle, state police said.

WILL COUNTY, IL — One person was killed and another was injured in an early morning crash on Interstate 55 in Will County, according to police.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday on the southbound interstate near Weber Road in Romeoville, and involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial vehicle, state police said. Two people were taken to a hospital with injuries, one of whom later died.

The deceased victim was identified as 22-year-old Derek R. Hernandez of Elgin, according to Will County Coroner Laurie Summers, whose office said he was pronounced dead about 4 a.m. at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook.

Southbound lanes were closed but reopened around 8:15 a.m., according to police. Illinois State Police Troop 3 was investigating.
