Joliet Man Sentenced To 3 Years After 2016 DUI Crash

Joliet resident John Foster was taken into custody last month for his involvement in a 2016 Romeoville crash.

ROMEOVILLE, IL--Sentencing has been handed down in a DUI crash that occurred in Romeoville in February 2016. 38-year-old John Foster was sentenced earlier this month to three years in the Stateville Correctional Center.

Foster pleaded guilty to charges for aggravated DUI and the possession of a controlled substance.

Stacey Reyes, the mother of one of the crash victims, said she takes issue with the case knowing her daughter and how she sustained severe injuries.

Since the 2016 crash, Foster has continued to drive. He's had several traffic cases added to his record, according to Will County Circuit Court records. Those include driving while license suspended/revoked, transporting/carrying alcohol, leaving the scene and failure to reduce speed.

“I’m disappointed in the system,” Reyes said. “We were in court for over three years before he was finally sentenced. He continued to be arrested, continued to drive, and continued to break the law.”

Reyes said she hopes to draw attention to the system, how it works and how it re-victimizes the victim.

Foster has a projected parole date set for Sept. 22, 2020 and is expected to be discharged one year later.

“As far as the length of the sentence, I guess I would say, as a mom, there’s really no length that would’ve made me happy,” Reyes said. “I’m glad he was sentenced to serve jail time. I was under the impression that maybe he wouldn’t serve any time at all.”

Reyes said she wishes Foster could receive a longer jail sentence.

“Considering how long my daughter and I and my whole family suffered emotionally, I think that sentencing is nothing compared to what we’ve suffered,” she said. “I’m disappointed with the sentencing, but at least I know that he is off of the streets for the next year-and-a half and nobody else will be his victim, like my daughter was.”
