Valley View students can access online lessons in math and language arts over the summer.

Over 200 enthusiastic people attended this month’s Middle School Summer Odyssey Program orientation at Brooks Middle School to learn about Valley View School District’s exciting new on-line offering.

The program is designed to enhance a student’s academic knowledge of math and language arts.  MAP scores from the past school year determine their beginning learning level for the summer.

The program includes roughly 60-plus lessons that match each student’s ability. Students can work from home or go to computer labs at any of the five VVSD middle schools from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Parents will be able log in to check their child’s progress.

“I’m enrolling my seventh-grader so he can stay on top of what’s going on and maybe he’ll be a couple of steps ahead and will not be behind when school starts,” said Tammy Mohrmann.

For Pastor Calvin Quarles, it’s an opportunity to enhance his 8th grade daughter’s organizational skills. “She does well in her classes when she is organized. I feel this will help her do better in the classes.”

“Learning does not stop in the summer,” said Shanitra Brooks, a parent of an incoming sixth-grader.

“My son is in sixth grade and I want him to retain the information he learned during the school year,” added Lizbeth Vargas.

Information on the program is available by contacting Keith Wood at Brooks Middle School (630-759-6340).
