Featured Obituary:
Roberta “Berta” (Ryan) Klamm, 68, of Mt. Prospect, IL, passed away at home surrounded by family on Friday, March 31st. Berta died from complications of pancreatic cancer, which she fought with ongoing strength and hope for 3.5 years.
Berta is survived by her husband, Ken, her children Andy (Stephanie) Klamm and Emily (Chaz) Mailey, grandchildren Maxwell, Jayda, Maya, and Aliyah, siblings Connie (Tim) Laughlin, Carolyn (John) Kiley, Julie (John) Hausheer, and Alex (Jeannie) Ryan, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Berta was born to William and Rita Ryan on March 27th, 1955. She grew up in a busy, loving home as the youngest of five children. Berta was an outstanding student throughout her education at Saint Catherine’s School, Siena High School, and the University of Illinois. She met her husband Ken while they were student teaching in 1976.
Berta loved her family above all else. She loved family weddings and holidays, game nights, family vacations, being outdoors, playing the piano and singing, reading with her grandchildren, and sharing family meals. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and had immense pride in her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. She was also a devoted aunt and consistently stayed involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews. She and Ken were married for 44 years and enjoyed traveling the world together, especially after they retired. Their love for each other was deep and unconditional; they modeled a loving, committed relationship each and every day.
Berta prioritized relationships and friendships like no one else. She had multiple groups of friends that had been together for decades, and all of them described her as the glue that held the group together. She was genuine and authentic in all of her relationships. She cared about everyone, asked questions about their lives, and remembered every detail. She anticipated everyone’s needs and provided comfort, laughter, conversation, and meals. The love she put into the world was never more evident than during her final weeks of life, when she had an endless stream of visitors coming to share that love with her in return.
Berta spent 35 years as a math teacher, most of them at New Trier High School. She was known as a caring and compassionate teacher, but also one that demanded and brought about the best from her students. Over time, she emerged as a leader in the department and school, and served as a mentor to her students, advisees, and colleagues. As one of the first working mothers in her department, she paved the way for many women who followed her path in the decades that followed, and offered advice and support to all of them along the way.
Berta’s creative hands were never at rest. She had many hobbies and talents, which she used to create countless gifts over her lifetime. She was a skilled seamstress and made many clothes and costumes for her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She knitted shawls, scarves, and sweaters, and made baby quilts and t-shirt quilts to commemorate many births and retirements. She loved gardening and her flower beds grew bigger and more beautiful with each passing year. After she retired, she took up a new stained glass hobby, and her creations adorn the windows of friends and family everywhere. She was an avid baker and was known for her platters of Christmas cookies, and never showed up anywhere without a meal in hand.
Berta will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her legacy will live on through the impact she made and the example she set. If we all strive to live the way Berta lived, the world will be a better place.Read more via N. H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home »
