Featured Obituary:

Emily A. Jackson, beloved life partner of John Knickelbine, treasured sister and cherished aunt, died on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Northshore Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview, Ill. She had severe COPD and could not overcome COVID combined with pneumonia. Emily was 73.

Emily, or MLE as she liked to use, was born to J.D. and Fredna Jackson on September 8, 1948, in West Memphis, Ark. She received a National Merit Scholarship and graduated in 1970 from Rosary College (now known as Dominican University) in River Forest, Ill., with a degree in Economics. She began her 39-year career in 1970 at the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), ending as a Branch Chief and retiring in 2009.

In addition to John, her devoted partner of nearly 50 years, Emily is survived by four siblings: sisters Gloria, of Marion, Ark., and Lois (Donnie) Thomas of Jefferson City, Mo.; brothers Michael, of Little Rock, Ark., and Christopher (Angela) of Collierville, Tenn. Nieces Danielle, Kelsey, Jordan, and Crystal; nephew Bryan; great-nieces Kaiya and Savannah; and great-nephews Johnathan and C.J. will miss their “Auntie Em.”

Frequent work trips took her to many cities in the U.S., San Diego being her favorite. MLE was an enthusiastic bowler for many years. Her apparel choice at bowling -- and nearly everywhere else she could get away with -- was one of her vast collection of Hawaiian shirts. Unfortunately, worsening COPD curtailed travel during retirement, though she did somehow manage to bowl for years with a tank of liquid oxygen strapped to her back.

Emily was a wonderful friend and role model to many. She had friends from the BLS, from her bowling leagues, and from everywhere she went. She was kind and generous, and a great conversationalist. John’s extended family adored her and were thankful he brought Emily into their lives.

Emily was an enthusiastic and discerning shopper. When COPD slowed her down, she shopped avidly online. Emily was a special friend to Chris Hebein and bowled in the Annual Bowl-A-Thon for the National Association for Down Syndrome for more than 25 years – she got family and friends to sponsor her and help her raise money to support those with Down Syndrome.

Emily was a dedicated advocate for the COPD community. She was a volunteer with the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department at Evanston Hospital, where she developed training materials for the program. Emily was also a co-facilitator for an in-person support group at the Levy Center in Evanston.
