Featured Obituary:
Cynthia Brooks Holmberg, age 87 of Glenview, Illinois, passed away peacefully with family at her side on May 27 shortly after suffering a hematoma and fall.
Cynthia was born on the south side of Chicago on October 8, 1934, to parents Henry and Edna. She graduated as valedictorian from Hirsch High School in 1952 and continued to DePauw University where she met husband Ron. Cynthia was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa upon graduating with a BA in 1956. She and Ron married later that same year and were inseparable for the next 66 years.
After marriage, Cynthia and Ron moved to Aberdeen, Maryland, where Ron was in the service and Cynthia taught elementary school. When Ron’s term ended in 1957, they moved back to the Chicagoland area to be near family, first to LaGrange where she continued to teach until she became a mother, then to Park Ridge, before settling in Wilmette and their home of 40 years. For the past 11 years, Cynthia and Ron have lived at the Vi at the Glen in Glenview.
Family was Cynthia’s pride-and-joy, and she relished being the wife and helpmate to Ron and a mother to the kids. Unfailingly present at conferences, sporting events, concerts, and nearly every other event in everyone’s lives to show her support, she took great pleasure in providing any kind of sustenance -- from meals to wisdom -- on a daily basis (which quite literally never stopped up to her last day). A go-to for more than just family, she seemed always to have volunteered for something. In her last volunteer role, she served five years on the board of the Bright Futures Foundation (a residents-sponsored scholarship fund for employees of the Vi) and was the board's Secretary until last year. Cynthia was never not busy. (“Bored people are boring people.”) In addition to being an artisan in the kitchen, garden, and with a needle, Cynthia never wasn’t reading a book and authored four books herself. But she loved music most and loved to sing. For nearly 80 uninterrupted years she participated in a choral group, including with the performing group Sunshine and in the choir at Northfield Community Church into her 80s.Read more via Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
