Featured Obituary:
Barbara Cooper Fowler died surrounded by family on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022 at her home in Evanston, Illinois. She was 88 years old.
Barbara was the loving wife of nearly 65 years to Gary Lane Fowler; devoted mother to Ellen (Jeff) Hummel and Mark (Rebecca) Fowler; and beloved grandmother of Michael Fowler, Sara Hummel, Evan Hummel and Daniel Fowler.
Born on July 11, 1934 in Schenectady, New York, Barbara earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Syracuse University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
She met her husband, Gary, at Syracuse, and they were married in 1957. Barbara taught elementary and high school while Gary was deployed with the Army; from 1963 to 1965, they lived in Europe and North Africa before returning to the United States. Barbara continued to travel throughout her life, and especially enjoyed spending time at their home in the North Woods of Wisconsin.
A lifelong member of the League of Women Voters (LWV), Barbara committed her life to women’s equality and social issues. In the 1980s, she served as government chair of the Illinois LWV, and president of the Elmhurst, Illinois chapter. She was executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence; government affairs consultant for the Illinois Planned Parenthood Association; and a founding member of the National Forum for Women in Woodstock, Illinois. Barbara spent years lobbying for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, which Illinois finally ratified in 2018. She smiled when told the news.
In 1988, Barbara co-founded Financial Planning Associates of Hyde Park, a private firm focused on financial services and divorce mediation for women. From 1991 to 1998, she helped to organize the Greater Chicago Society of Certified Financial Planners, serving as chairperson, president and board member. She closed the business in 2006, when she and her husband retired to Evanston.Read more via N. H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home »
