SKOKIE, IL — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Justin Johnson, the band director at Niles West High School. Johnson nominated Zachary, a 12th grader from Skokie.

How do you know the star local student?
Zachary is a current student.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?
Zachary is an amazing oboist and has been the recipient of many awards and accomplishments. Over the past few years Zachary has participated in competitions both locally and nationally. He is currently in the process of applying for music conservatory to continue on his music making journey. The real reason I wanted to nominate Zach for this award is because he has done all of this while facing significant health issues. Even when facing with missing time or other health concerns, he has pushed through in remarkable fashion. I have never encountered a student with his drive and his focused attention to relentlessly pursue his passion.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?
Zach is a great student and has only played the oboe since 7th grade. His skill and ability are remarkable given the fact that it is not even his first instrument.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Zach!
