Burglary Suspect Dies In Lawndale Shootout With Police: CPD

Chicago police said the suspect fired at officers during a foot chase, who returned fire, striking the suspect. COPA is investigating.

CHICAGO — A burglary suspect died after a shootout Sunday morning with Chicago police officers in the Lawndale neighborhood, Chicago police officials said.

Around 10:47 a.m., officers from the 10th (Ogden) District responded to a burglary in progress in the 1800 block of South Central Park Avenue. The officers encountered the suspect, which resulted in a foot chase.

Police said the suspect fired at officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect. Officers gave the person first aid, who was pronounced dead at an area hospital. A weapon was recovered on the scene, according to police.

Neighbors described hearing multiple gunshots being fired from various locations. The investigation included several locations around 18th Street between Central Park Avenue and Hamlin Avenue.

“Like a war back and forth, I don't know, just a lot of gunshots,” a resident told ABC 7 Chicago.

Officers were taken to an area hospital for observation. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability were at the scene along with the Investigative Response Team. The investigation is ongoing.

The Officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days. This matter remains under investigation, and all further inquiries can be directed to the COPA at 312-746-3609.
