Chicago Cop Shoots Armed Man, Grazing His Neck: Police
An "armed confrontation" between officers and the victim happened Saturday night on the Southwest Side, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A man who allegedly was carrying handgun was grazed in the neck Saturday night when Chicago police opened fire during "an armed confrontation" between the man and officers on the Southwest Side, according to a preliminary statement by the department. The shooting happened at around 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the 5600 block of South Artesian Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, police said. The victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and no officers were hurt in the incident.
According to police, 8th District tactical officers saw several men drinking alcohol in public and approached the group on foot. While investigating, the officers noticed one of the men was carrying a handgun, and that's when the incident escalated, police said.
The armed man was grazed in the neck when one of the officers opened fire, police said. Although investigators recovered a weapon from the scene, it was not clear if the victim fired his handgun. The officer who fired shots will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days, which is department policy concerning a police-involved shooting. The shooting and use of force are being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, police said.

The police-involved shooting Saturday comes nearly a week after an off-duty CPD sergeant shot and wounded a mentally disabled 18-year-old man in the arm Aug. 13 in the Morgan Park neighborhood. On the recommendation of the IPRA, Supt. Eddie Johnson stripped the sergeant of his police powers indefinitely Monday while the incident is under investigation.

The teen, who police said is autistic and schizophrenic, was treated at an area hospital and released. No weapon belonging to the victim has been recovered.
