Chicago Cop Shot In Leg In 'Armed Confrontation'

UPDATED: One person is in custody stemming from Friday's shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago police officer was shot and wounded Friday during an "armed confrontation" on the South Side, according to a department spokesman. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on his Twitter feed. At least one person is in custody, Guglielmi wrote.

According to police, officers responded to an armed robbery call at around 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 21, in a business plaza at West 46th Street and Ashland Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to a a police statement. Witnesses at the scene directed police toward the suspects, who were nearby. Gunfire then was exchanged before the suspects fled on foot, police said. A two-year Chicago police veteran was shot in the left leg during the incident, police said. Officers later apprehended a suspect in the shooting, and detectives are questioning a person of interest in the shooting, which still under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority, police said. No charges have been filed in the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, according to police.
