The man, who has a valid FOID card, told Chicago police he shot the 3 people in self-defense Sunday night.

CHICAGO, IL — An East Side homeowner told Chicago police Sunday that he shot and killed three alleged burglars in self-defense when the suspects allegedly broke in to his home, according to NBC 5 Chicago. The suspects included a 17-year-old boy, a 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. All three suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting happened at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, in the 10200 block of South Ewing Avenue when the suspects allegedly broke in to the homeowner's basement, the Sun-Times reports. Police said that after the homeowner, who has a valid Firearm Owner's ID card, shot the suspects, he fled to another part of the house and secured himself there, according to NBC 5. The homeowner then called 911.

Police are investigating the shooting as a suspected burglary, and they have not released the identities of the shooter or the victims. It's not known if the suspects were armed, NBC 5 reports.
