Accused Carjacker Fatally Shot, 2nd Suspect Arrested After Bishop Ford Chase
UPDATED: The shooting happened Tuesday after Dolton police chased suspects who allegedly hijacked a vehicle in Hazel Crest.

CHICAGO, IL — A teenage carjacking suspect was fatally shot by police and a second suspect was arrested Tuesday afternoon following a chase that started in Hazel Crest and ended on the Bishop Ford Freeway on the Far South Side, according to authorities. The incident shut down a stretch of inbound Interstate 94 to a single lane near 130th Street while police searched for one of the alleged carjackers who had fled the area on foot. The shooting also shut down the South Shore train line until about 4:30 p.m.
According to Illinois State Police, the shooting happened at around 2:19 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, following a chase between officers from the Dolton Police Department and two suspects allegedly involved in an aggravated vehicular hijacking in Hazel Crest. The pursuit along the expressway eventually led to a foot chase for one of the suspects near 130th Street, the state police said. A collision between the suspects' vehicle, an SUV, and a semitrailer forced the accused carjackers to jump from the vehicle and flee on foot, the Chicago Tribune reports. That's when the 17-year-old suspect allegedly drew a gun on Dolton officers, who then open fire on the boy, the report added.

The suspect shot by police was taken to Oak Lawn's Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the report stated. Meanwhile, the second suspect escaped into nearby weeds and was apprehended about an hour later around 300 yards from the crash scene, the report added.
In live helicopter video from WGN and Fox 32 Chicago as the manhunt was happening, officers could be seen walking along the expressway Tuesday afternoon, as well as the area surrounding it, in a search for the suspect. An abandoned and damaged SUV also can be seen stopped behind yellow crime scene tape in one of the lanes of the Bishop Ford.
