South Side Burger King Employees Can't Take Heat, Get Out of Kitchen

Skyrocketing heat indexes sent Burger King workers walking Thursday afternoon.

Employees at a South Side Burger King couldn't bear Thursday's excessive heat index — especially without air conditioning.

Workers walked off their jobs at the fast food joint located at 737 E. 47th St. due to their inability to work in the heat amidst a broken air conditioning system, Fox 32 reported.

The walk-off went down amidst the National Weather Service issuing an excessive heat watch for several Illinois counties, including Cook. It began at noon Thursday and continues through 7 p.m. on Friday.

Temperatures were in the mid-to-upper 90s Thursday with dew points approaching the upper 70s. Maximum heat index predictions are around 115 degrees.

"The intense weather is the result of an atmospheric phenomenon called a heat dome — a ridge, or high-pressure system, that traps hot air underneath it — creating unusually hot and humid conditions," according to NBC.
