Suicide Suspected In Death Of Man Held For Attempted Murder: Cook Co. Jail Rep

The South Side man, 23, had been held without bail since April.

CHICAGO, IL — A South Side man at the Cook County Jail on an attempted murder charge was found dead from a possible suicide Tuesday. A jail guard discovered Nathaniel Griffin Jr., 23, of the Grand Crossing neighborhood, in the jail's maximum security wing where he was being held without bail since April, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. A death investigation is under way, but a sheriff's spokeswoman told the Sun-Times that authorities believe Griffin killed himself.

According to the sheriff's office, Griffin was found at around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the Division 9 super-max section of the jail, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the report stated. No signs of foul play were evident, and Griffin's autopsy to determine a cause of death is set for Wednesday, the report added.

Griffin is the second person to die while in the custody of authorities in the past week. On Monday night, an unidentified West Side robbery suspect became unresponsive after Chicago police detained him while investigating an incident in the Lawndale neighborhood. He was taken in critical condtion to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for the South Side and Chicago — or other neighborhoods.
