19 Coronavirus Cases At Illinois Juvenile Detention Center

ST. CHARLES, IL — More than a dozen staff members and three children being held at the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice’s detention center in St. Charles have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to officials.

The Illinois Youth Center has reported 19 coronavirus cases, including 16 among staff members, officials from the Illinois Department of Public Health said in a news release.

Officials said everyone at the facility has been tested for the coronavirus, and IDJJ officials are implementing measures to limit the spread of the virus.

About 80 young people are detained at the facility, located at 3825 Campton Hills Road, which employs about 140 people. The Illinois Youth Center also serves as the main processing center for males who have been sentenced to serve time at a facility run by the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, according to its website.

Other facilities run by state agencies are also experiencing outbreaks, according to officials.

The Chester Mental Health Center in Chester has also experienced an outbreak of the coronavirus, with 27 staff members testing positive, along with five people being treated at the facility, according to a report by Capitol News Illinois. Chester Mental Health Center, operated by the Illinois Department of Human Services, is the only maximum security mental health facility in the state for people who have been ordered by a court to complete treatment.

The Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee, also operated by the IDHS, has seen a similar spike in cases recently, with 19 residents and 13 staff members testing positive over the past month, CBS Chicago reports.

The facility had gone two months without new coronavirus cases after it became the site of one of the first large outbreaks in the state in March, the report states. Nearly four dozen coronavirus cases were confirmed among residents and staff during the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic.
