26 Deaths, Nearly 4,200 Coronavirus Cases In St. Charles
St. Charles has recorded nearly 75 percent of its total coronavirus cases since a second wave started in October, public health data shows.
ST. CHARLES, IL — St. Charles was hit hard by a second wave of the coronavirus starting in mid-October, with more than 3,000 residents testing positive since then, public health data shows.
The 3,040 new cases since Oct. 12 represent nearly three-quarters of all cases recorded in the city since the start of the pandemic last spring, according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Six months passed between St. Charles’ first case and its 1,000th case, but the city recorded its 2,000th cases about six weeks later on Nov. 7. St. Charles’ 3,000th case came three weeks later after a huge surge in cases.
Almost 1,400 cases were recorded among St. Charles residents in November, more than during the previous four months combined. Cases dropped about 32 percent from November to December, which saw 954 positive tests, the state’s data shows.

During the first six days of January 2021, 131 St. Charles residents have tested positive for the coronavirus.
St. Charles’ seven-day rolling average of new cases — a measure that accounts for daily fluctuations in testing to show longer-term trends in coronavirus data — hit an all-time high of 63 on Nov. 8. That measure dropped to 24 on Wednesday, though it’s still higher than at any point between the start of the pandemic in March and mid-October, the state’s data shows.

The coronavirus’ second wave in St. Charles fueled a significant rise in related deaths over the past three months.
Public health officials reported 10 total COVID-19 deaths in St. Charles at the end of September. That number rose to 17 by Nov. 21.
As of Jan. 6, 26 St. Charles residents have died from COVID-19, according to IDPH statistics, which show at least 10 were linked to long-term-care facilities.
