Booster Vaccination Appointments Available For Kane County Youth

The Kane County Health Department (KCHD) announces Pfizer COVID-19 booster vaccination appointments for youths ages 12 to 15 at the Kane Vax Hub in Batavia.

On January 3, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and expanded it to include a single booster doses for individuals 12-15 years. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) reviewed the available safety data following the administration of more than 25 million vaccine doses in adolescents and concluded COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Today, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) adopted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation for those individuals aged 12-15 years to receive the booster dose five months after receiving the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

This week, the CDC also authorized an additional primary dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for moderately or severely immunocompromised 5–11-year-olds 28 days after their second shot.

The Kane Vax Hub at 501 N. Randall Street in Batavia is open Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Eligible individuals are encouraged to make an appointment at KaneVax.org. Walk-in appointments are not accepted. Persons requiring assistance with appointments are encouraged to call the Kane Vax line at 855-4-KANEVAX (855-452-6382).
All three COVID vaccines, Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen, are available at the Kane Vax Hub. At this time, only the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is authorized and recommended for youths 5 to 17 years of age.

The CDC allows for the mixing and matching of the type of vaccine.

• Individuals over 18 who received the Janssen primary dose may receive a booster of Janssen, Moderna or Pfizer/Comirnaty 2 months after their primary dose.
• Individuals over 18 who received the Moderna primary series may receive a booster of Janssen, Moderna or Pfizer/Comirnaty 6 months after their last dose.
• Individuals over 18 who received the Pfizer/Comirnaty primary series may receive a booster of Janssen, Moderna or Pfizer/Comirnaty 5 months after their last dose.
• Individuals 12 -17 who received the Pfizer/Comirnaty primary series may receive a booster of Pfizer/Comirnaty 5 months after their last dose.

To speed the check-in process, make sure to register on-line, bring your vaccination card, and a consent form for the vaccine you choose. Consent forms are available to download from KaneVax.org and KaneHealth.com.

People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.
