Fraud Incident Avoided By St. Charles Township Resident

Reports said the Minnesota buyer mailed the seller a check from a bank in Georgia, which raised his suspicions.

ST. CHARLES — A St. Charles Township resident told police he narrowly escaped becoming a victim of fraud during an attempt to sell his car online. The man posted his vehicle for sale on cars.com and autotrader.com and settled on a price of $9,250 with a buyer who contacted him through one of the sites, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

The Kane County Chronicle reports on April 24, the buyer mailed the man a check from St. Paul, Minnesota. According to the report, the check included an extra $1,750.36 to pay for shipping the car, but the man hadn't received a location to send it. The man grew suspicious because the check was from SunTrust Bank in Georgia, rather than a bank in Minnesota. He called the bank, where an employee confirmed the check was fake, according to the Chronicle.

The fake check was submitted as evidence after the resident made a report, and thankfully, the man didn't lose any money.
