Gold Coin Worth $1,100 Found In St. Charles Salvation Army Kettle

ST. CHARLES, IL — Anonymous donors have dropped thousands of dollars in gold into the Salvation Army's red kettles this month, a streak of generosity that continued last week in St. Charles.

The Salvation Army found a 1978 Russia 100 Rouble gold Olympic coin in a kettle that was outside Jewel-Osco at 2073 Prairie St., according to a news release.

The coin is valued between $1,100 and $1,200, which will benefit the Salvation Army Tri-City Corps Community Center in St. Charles, the release states.

The gold coin donated in St. Charles is one of 30 similar donations the Salvation Army has received this winter holiday season. The Salvation Army found a 1-ounce, 2003 $50 American Gold Eagle coin in a kettle in Geneva. That coin was valued at $2,000.

“It never ceases to amaze me how caring and generous our community is,” said Lt. Scott Smith, an officer for the Salvation Army Tri-City Corps. “We’ve been given another incredible blessing in this season of uncertainty and need.”

Donations of gold and silver coins to the Salvation Army's red kettles has become a much-anticipated holiday tradition throughout Chicagoland. The red-kettle campaign dates back to 1891 in San Francisco.
