ST. CHARLES, IL — After being forced to cancel many of its events over the past five months due to the coronavirus, the St Charles Business Alliance got creative to save this fall’s Scarecrow Festival.

The 35th annual St. Charles Scarecrow Festival, scheduled for Oct. 9-11, will have a new format, with scarecrows and festival-related events to be spread throughout the city to encourage social distancing and limit crowds, business alliance leaders said in a news release.

“We want to make sure to set the expectation that this year is going to look significantly different than previous Scarecrow Festivals,” said Jenna Sawicki, executive director of the St. Charles Business Alliance. “While there will be major changes in place, we have been working hard to keep the spirit of this amazing, community festival alive so that we can keep the joy and benefits it brings to our businesses and community.”

The new format is also set to drive foot traffic to St. Charles businesses, with the organization encouraging residents to take a “Scarecrow Stroll” to see the figures. The scarecrows will be paired with businesses offering Scarecrow Festival deals, special and events, the release states.

Though the majority of the Scarecrow Festival will move away from Lincoln Park this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the park will still serve as the backdrop for a photography station for that weekend. There will also be a drive-in concert, a downtown scavenger hunt and a pumpkin carver, who will livestream demonstrations, the release states.
