St. Charles North Football Player Wakes Up From Coma: Family

'This is best news we've had all weekend and we're happy to share it with everyone,' the football player's uncle wrote on a GoFundMe page.

ST. CHARLES, IL — The family of a sophmore St. Charles North football player who suffered a severe brain injury during a game at St. Charles East Friday got "the best news" Monday, when the young man woke up from his coma. Sophmore football player Aidan Carlson was playing in the Oct. 4 game against St. Charles East when he was injured, and airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he underwent emergency Neurosurgery, according to a GoFundMe page set up Monday by Sean and Ashley Peters, Carlson's aunt and uncle.

"Just a few hours ago Aidan was taken out of his coma and was able to wake up on his own," Sean wrote on the page Monday. "This is best news we’ve had all weekend and we’re happy to share it with everyone. We are beyond joyed to see how quickly the community came to aid Aidan and his family."

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $20,100 had been raised for Carlson and his family, doubling a set $10,000 goal.

"I’m hoping we can help them so they can focus on Aidan’s recovery, and not the many other concerns that are bound to come eventually," Sean added. "Anything at all helps even if it’s just keeping him in your thoughts, thank you all for your support it means so much to us."

In addition to the GoFundMe page, a group called Aidan's Angels (see below) is selling scarfs for $10, and will donate all proceeds to Carlson's family.

According to his uncle, Carlson was "so proud to wear no. 19 for the North Stars."

"He loves his school and team," Sean wrote.
