St. Charles Teen Performs CPR On Young Neighbor, Saves Her Life

ST. CHARLES, IL — A recent St. Charles North graduate is being hailed as a lifesaver after she saved her young neighbor from choking on her breakfast, according to a report by the Kane County Chronicle.

Mary Kate Phillips performed CPR on her neighbor, Brooke Baumann, who had a piece of a pancake stuck in her airway one morning earlier this month, the report states.

Brooke’s mother, Kate, ran across the street to Phillips’ house after she was unable to dislodge the food, and Phillips used her CPR kit and training to clear Brooke’s airway before police reached the home, the Chronicle reports.

Phillips credited her training in St. Charles North’s Physical Education Leaders program, led by swim coach and teacher Rob Rooney, for knowing what to do and how to stay calm during the stressful situation to save Brooke, the report states.
