DuPage Officials Talk Consolidation of Clerk's Office, Election Commission

Local officials say they hope to merge two county departments located in Wheaton.

Officials say they are moving forward with consolidating two DuPage County offices, but their plans likely won't come to fruition until after November's election.

"We are moving forward with our efforts to create a streamlined, more efficient, more cost-effective government," County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said at Tuesday's board meeting, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Cronin was referring to plans to combine the DuPage County Clerk's Office and the DuPage Election Commission, both located at 421 N County Farm Road in Wheaton.

"As we look at what is the best model for administering elections, the goal is to find additional savings while providing DuPage voters the highest level of service," Election Commission Chair Cathy Terrill said, in the story. "We're looking for a framework for a new model that provides good governance but still follows best practices in election management, provides cost-effectiveness and accountability, eliminates duplication and retains our commitment to transparency."

Twenty four people are employed at the Election Commission and 18 work in the clerk's office. A state law may need to change in order for the merge to happen, officials said.
