Glen Ellyn Man Fatally Hit By Car In Wheaton; Aurora Driver Charged

Police say an Aurora man fled after fatally hitting Jared Barnes, 25, of Glen Ellyn.

WHEATON, IL — A Glen Ellyn man was killed early Sunday when he was fatally struck by a car in a hit-and-run crash in Wheaton.

Jared Barnes, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. An Aurora man was later arrested in connection with the incident.

Police were called to the intersection of Butterfield Road and Scottsdale Circle just after 4:45 a.m. for a report that a man was lying unconscious in the street. When officers got to the scene, they say it was apparent Barnes had been hit by a car.

The incident closed Butterfield Road eastbound for several hours as MERIT and the Major Crime Crash Reconstruction Team conducted an investigation.

Following the investigation, police found a Hyundai Sonata with significant damage to its front end and arrested Miguel Angel Abrego-Abrego. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

"A young man's life was taken too soon in this crash, and the offender needs to be accountable for this crime," Wheaton Police Chief Princeton J. Youker said in a statement.

Abrego-Abrego is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 7.
