Carmel's Unemployment Rate Drops Again; 0.7 Percent In December

Carmel, IN – The Indiana Department of Workforce Development released labor statistics for cities, towns and counties in Indiana this week and Carmel once again saw a drop in the City’s unemployment rate. The rate for December, 2021, was 0.7 percent, which is lower than November’s 1.2 percent and October’s 1.6 percent. The State of Indiana’s unemployment rate is 2.7 percent while the national rate is 3.9 percent, both of those are seasonally adjusted.

Carmel’s unemployment rate is tied with West Lafayette as having the lowest among any city in Indiana with a population of at least 25,000.

This news is a positive indication of the success that Carmel has had in attracting highly educated residents who are able to fill high-wage jobs created by the City’s 130-plus corporate headquarters and other local business employers.

“Our local economy is strong and it is good to start the new year off with numbers that show we are still on the right path of building a city with a high quality of life that can attract the professionals – young and old – who are able to fill the thousands of jobs created by our growing corporate community,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “Recent Census Bureau statistics show that more than 70 percent of our residents have a bachelor's degree or higher and that is why Carmel is the perfect place for corporations to establish their operations here and take advantage of a workforce that can help them grow and be successful.”
