The City of Carmel has changed the lighting in two prominent areas of the City to show solidarity and support for the people of Ukraine who are under attack by Russian armed forces. Mayor Jim Brainard ordered the color schemes be changed to blue and yellow on the Monon Greenway Bridge that spans Carmel Drive, just west of Range Line Road; and the same be done for the ambient lighting at Midtown Plaza.

A new sculpture was unveiled Monday, February 28 at Main Street and the Monon Greenway. The life-size sculpture titled “Waiting to Cross,” which depicts a playful young girl holding onto a stop sign, is part of the J. Seward Johnson sculpture collection.

Mayor Jim Brainard, members of the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Human Relations, members of the Carmel Public Art Advisory Committee and other City officials unveiled the sculpture, which is located just south of Main Street along the Monon Greenway between Bazbeaux and Anthony's Chophouse. In addition to its artistic value, the sculpture also serves as a functioning stop sign on the Monon Greenway at that intersection.

The City's project is underway at Main Street and Veterans Way

The City's ongoing project to bury transmission lines has resulted in the closure of Main Street at Veterans Way for up to a month. Portions of Main Street are open for parking but there is no vehicular through-traffic. Pedestrian access via sidewalks and crosswalks is open; crosswalk locations may be adjusted throughout construction for pedestrian safety.

Also underway around March 1, Range Line Road Reconstruction - There will be a partial closure of Range Line Road as medians and multi-use paths are added between Carmel Drive and 116th Street.

Range Line Road and Medical Drive Roundabout - Starting March 14, there will be a 45-day full closure to construct the new roundabout at this intersection.

Monon Greenway Reconstruction - There is ongoing construction on the Monon from City Center Drive to Carmel Drive. This work has an expected completion date of November 2022.

As a reminder, as we enter the warmer months, construction season will be in full swing. Please rememeber to allow for extra travel time, be respectful of contractors in the construction areas and remember that there are always multiple routes to travel in addition to the recommended detour routes.
