Police Arrest Carmel Student Found With Loaded Handgun

The 17-year old male juvenile was arrested and taken into custody, and was later taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center.

CARMEL, IN — The Carmel Police Department said a 17-year-old male student was arrested Tuesday afternoon after Carmel Police School Resource Officers responded to the Carmel Learning Center in the 500 block of East Main Street when they received a tip of a student in possession of a loaded handgun. In a release, Carmel Police Department Lieutenant Joe Bickel reported officers arrived at the center, located the juvenile student and confiscated the handgun without any further incident.

The 17-year old male juvenile was arrested and taken into custody, and was later taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center on felony charges of possession of firearms on school property and theft, receiving stolen property. He's also facing a misdemeanor charge of carrying a handgun without a licesne, police added.

"We would like to thank the person who quickly notified Carmel Clay School Administration and the swift action taken by school personnel," Lt. Bickel said, according to the department. "This solidifies the saying 'If you see something, say something.' As a collaborative effort, safety and security in our schools is a top priority and concern."
