Memory Care Residents Celebrate Forecast with Groundhog

Seniors at Morningside Place, and Anthem Memory Care community, gathered to hear the forecast from Morningside Magoo, a stuffed groundhog.

While Americans across the country tuned in for the weather forecast from Punxsutawney Phil, some seniors at a local memory care community got the scoop from a new furry friend in town. Morningside Magoo made an appearance at Morningside Place, an Anthem Memory Care community, located at W. 81st St., Overland Park.

The special stuffed groundhog contradicted the famous groundhog and predicted six more weeks of winter with the help of his handler Keith Melick, clinical service director for Morningside Place. The residents stuffed and named the groundhog in advance of the whimsical celebration. Family and friends dressed in furs and top hats to hear the proclamation.

“Even though Morningside Magoo didn’t agree with Punxsutawney Phil, our seniors are still hopeful for an early spring,” said Sara Coss, life engagement director for Morningside Place. “Our residents enjoy celebrating holidays, and this playful one brought smiles to everyone’s faces.”
