Tallgrass Creek Residents Embrace Fitness and Friendship
Fitness Specialist Ashley Huesers and Coordinator Camin Bell offer a wide range of classes for Tallgrass Creek residents

At Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., fitness isn't just about exercise--it's also about connecting with others.
"Group fitness is truly part of the culture here," says Fitness Coordinator Camin Bell. "When people sign up for an exercise class, they have goals in mind. They come back because they feel good about their progress and want to see their new friends. That motivation makes all the difference."
Resident Jim Ogden, a lifelong fitness enthusiast, loves the welcoming atmosphere of the fitness center and participating in group classes. "They are truly fun!" he says.

"We offer a variety of classes to suit a range of abilities," says Bell. "Whether you're just starting out or looking for a challenge, there's a class for you."
The robust schedule of group classes includes gentle seated workouts and more dynamic options like Body Balance and core strength training. The on-campus aquatics center also hosts classes suited for every level, including Aqua Gentle Joints for newcomers.

"We've designed our classes so there's something for every resident, every day of the week," says Fitness Specialist Ashley Huesers. "It supports them, body and mind."
But residents aren't limited to the gym or pool. The very design of Tallgrass Creek's campus, with beautiful walking trails, indoor hallways that connect every independent living building, and community gardens, naturally encourages movement.
Residents also have access to Wellbeats, an on-demand exercise app, and a daily lineup of fitness classes shown on the in-house TV channel.
Convenience is key
Jim has found that the on-campus fitness amenities and programs have helped him regain and maintain an active lifestyle.
"I have been physically active since the eighth grade, but I was less active in my 50s when I was busier with my career. I know from experience that recovering fitness later in life can be more difficult," says Jim, who moved to Tallgrass Creek in 2018. "Staying active here is easy! There's the gym, the pool, the spa, the classes, and so many places to walk."
In addition to group classes, Jim visits the fitness center at least five days a week for an independent routine of warmups, strength training, and exercises from his physical therapist.
Opportunities for health
Marilyn Richardson, who moved to Tallgrass Creek from Olathe, Kans., in 2022, agrees that convenience is key.
"Before we moved here, I exercised by myself at home with various equipment in my basement. But now, I'm exercising with specific guidance for my age and my goals," she says.
Marilyn now takes up to eight classes a week, from core to cardio, and has made good friends along the way.
"I really like the instructors, especially Camin. She explains things so well and is always positive," she says. "Plus, I have friends now because we've been in classes together so often."
Marilyn's husband, Bill, who had knee and hip replacements, has found the seated core class to be extremely beneficial for recovering and staying mobile.
"Ashley and Camin have met both of our needs as fitness instructors," Marilyn says.
Residents like Bill and Jim, who had suffered from an arthritic knee and a pulled hamstring, also benefit from the close collaboration between Tallgrass Creek's fitness and physical therapy teams.
"Our physical therapy department and fitness team work smoothly together," Jim shares. "The gym even has equipment that matches what the physical therapists use, so you can keep doing your 'PT homework' to stay strong."
Connection and community
It's this blend of physical wellness and social connection that makes fitness at Tallgrass Creek so special.
"The best part is the community-building aspect," says Jim. "You get to know others with similar interests and motivations, [which helps you] stay active and involved. The friendships formed in fitness classes carry over into the rest of community life."
Marilyn agrees, saying, "For me, exercise isn't optional--it's how I stay mobile, strong, and social. Plus, I don't have to drive anywhere. It's all right here!"
Whether residents prefer walking with friends, joining a core class, swimming laps, or exploring on-demand workouts, the fitness options at Tallgrass Creek are nearly endless. And with encouragement from skilled instructors, many find themselves trying new things for the first time.
"We always keep an open ear to what residents want," Bell says. "If we can make it happen, we do. That's what makes Tallgrass Creek such a special place to stay active and connected."
