Lexington shelters expand capacity as winter weather plan activates (lex18.com) — Lexington’s emergency winter weather plan is now active, meaning local shelters must expand capacity so no one is turned away, even if that means using hallways or lobbies. The city is also operating a temporary winter shelter on Versailles Road with 216 extra beds through April. With homelessness up to 925 people this year, providers stress both compassion and long-term solutions.
   

2. United Way of the Bluegrass, partners kick-off their first food drive to fight hunger in Lexington (fox56news.com) — United Way of the Bluegrass and local partners just launched a new “December Cheer United Here” food drive in Lexington, packing more than 150 holiday meal kits at E7 Kids Cafe on East Maxwell Street. Volunteers are delivering the Aldi-donated kits directly to families already connected with the nonprofit, aiming to make this first-time effort a recurring holiday tradition for food-insecure Lexington households.
   

3. Kentucky appeals court reinstates Lexington murder case (fox56news.com) — A major Lexington murder case tied to a 2020 Leestown Road crash is back on after the Kentucky Court of Appeals overturned a Fayette judge’s dismissal. The ruling orders a new trial, sharply criticizes the judge’s handling, and clears the way for prosecutors to again pursue charges in the death of local driver Tammy Botkin.
   

4. Commerce Lexington names members of 2026 Ambassador Committee (lanereport.com) — Commerce Lexington has announced its 2026 Ambassador Committee, a volunteer group that supports local businesses and represents the chamber at events across Lexington. Dan Noel of Men In Kilts Lexington will return as committee chair, leading representatives from banks, construction firms, the University of Kentucky, nonprofits, and other companies. The program aims to strengthen connections, leadership, and support for the city’s business community.
   

5. Woman graduates UK decades after starting doctoral program (fox56news.com) — A Lexington resident who has called the city home for 50 years just finished her Doctor of Education at the University of Kentucky, decades after first starting the program. After pausing studies for family and a long teaching career, she returned post-retirement, graduating Friday with support from loved ones and a renewed sense of purpose for serving others.
