📰 News we're reading

1. Louisville church seeks shelter approval this Christmas (whas11.com) — Louisville churches can now apply for a new “accessory overnight shelter” designation, and Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral is racing to open beds for unhoused residents this winter. The Metro Council’s recently finalized rules are more flexible than permanent shelter requirements, potentially allowing more congregations to host people escaping homelessness or domestic violence as harsh weather sets in.

2. Kentucky leaders discuss data center boom, energy needed for them (whas11.com) — A massive new data center complex rising off Camp Ground Road in southwest Louisville could become Kentucky’s most powerful hub for AI and cloud services, driving big new energy demands. State leaders and LG&E are weighing how to power these facilities without raising local electric bills, while Gov. Beshear insists any projects must pay fair taxes and avoid shifting costs onto Louisville families.

3. Hardin County students deliver hope in the form of care packages (wave3.com) — Students from Hardin County’s Bluegrass Middle School brought more than 500 care packages to patients at UofL’s Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, offering comfort items like blankets and toiletries. Inspired by Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman’s breast cancer journey, the kids spent months assembling gifts and handwritten messages to lift the spirits of people facing cancer treatment.

4. ‘I didn't do anything': Video shows arrest in decades-old disappearance (wave3.com) — A decades-old missing persons mystery with deep Louisville ties has resurfaced after police arrested Debra Newton in Florida, decades after she and her young daughter left Louisville and vanished. Investigators say DNA linked her to a sister still living in the Louisville area, and Newton has now appeared before a Jefferson County judge on a custodial interference charge, pleading not guilty.

5. Louisville man charged with murder in September Phoenix Hill shooting (wdrb.com) — A Louisville man has been indicted on murder and weapons charges tied to a September shooting on East Muhammad Ali Boulevard in the Phoenix Hill area. He remains in Louisville Metro Corrections on a cash bond and is scheduled for arraignment in Jefferson County District Court in early January.
