Community advocates and city leaders look to 2026 with renewed focus on reducing violence (wlky.com) — Louisville Metro Police and local advocates are outlining how they’ll tackle violence and neighborhood safety heading into 2026, including expanding targeted SFI enforcement zones to the California neighborhood. Community leaders stress that reducing crime also means addressing food insecurity, housing, and youth opportunities, while police focus on visibility, technology, and relationship-building to rebuild trust and keep violent offenders off the streets.
   

2. 2 deadly crashes on Louisville's Preston Highway spark calls for improved safety measures (wdrb.com) — Three people were killed this week in two separate crashes on Louisville’s Preston Highway, including a pedestrian struck while crossing near Minor Lane and a collision involving a car and motorcycle near Maple Spring Drive. Diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011, Billy Cockerel received a life-saving organ in 2013 and now advocates the power of organ donation in Kentucky, where registrations have climbed significantly. His story highlights gratitude, presence, and community support.
   

4. Louisville community gathers to celebrate start of Kwanzaa (wave3.com) — Louisville families gathered at Saint Martin de Porres Church and a follow-up community fair this weekend to mark the first two days of Kwanzaa with drumming, storytelling, and kid-focused career and literacy activities. Organizers from River City Drum Corps and others emphasized Kwanzaa’s themes of self-determination, family, and safe community spaces as Louisville residents reconnected with African heritage and each other.
   

5. Where to recycle your real Christmas tree (wave3.com) — If you’ve got a real Christmas tree to get rid of in Louisville Fish and Wildlife is collecting undecorated evergreens through Jan. 15, 2026 for its “Christmas for the Fishes” program. Trees will be sunk in lakes and reservoirs around the state to create fish habitat, and many local communities also offer mulching options for natural trees.
