March is National Crafting Month, and Shreve Memorial Library is inviting patrons of all ages to learn something new and express themselves through crafting. Library patrons can learn new painting techniques, how to make do-it-yourself spring décor, jewelry, gift bags and more, as well as how to crochet and use an embroidery machine. Crafting programs will be held at Shreve Memorial Library branches throughout Caddo Parish, and all programs are free and open to the public.

National Crafting Month was established in 1994 by the Craft & Hobby Association as a way to help individuals discover hidden creativity. Individuals were encourage to find creative outlets and express themselves constructively through crafts. Over time, the celebration has evolved to signify a time for crafters to start new projects, try a new medium, or learn a brand new skill.

Just in time for spring, Shreve Memorial Library patrons can enjoy a variety of spring-themed crafts. At the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, crafters can learn new painting techniques by painting a clay flower pot. The program will take place on Tuesday, March 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. While all supplies are provided, space is limited. Those interested in attending can sign up at the branch, located at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, or by calling 318-687-6824.

The Belcher-Wyche Branch will also host a spring-themed painting program that teaches participants how to reuse and repurpose jigsaw puzzle pieces. Patrons will create their own works of art featuring their initials made out of jigsaw puzzle pieces painted in pastel spring colors. Adults and teens are invited to visit the branch, located at 409 Charles Street in Belcher, on Tuesday, March 22 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Additionally, library patrons can make their own spring wreath at the North Shreveport Branch on Thursday, March 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and crepe paper flowers at the Gilliam Branch on Tuesday, March 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All supplies will be provided for both programs. The North Shreveport Branch is located at 4844 North Market Street, while the Gilliam Branch is located at 12797 Main Street in Gilliam.

Do-it-yourself, or DIY, crafts are fun ways to creatively make everyday items that can be used for a multitude of purpose. Shreve Memorial Library branches will host several DIY classes, teaching patrons to make everything from mask holders to mini oven mitts, chef utensil holders, jewelry and gift bags. Supplies will be provided for each DIY crafting program and no prior experience is necessary.

Now through March 31, patrons of the Mooretown Branch, located at 4360 Hollywood Avenue, are invited to stop by the branch for a make and take DIY wool coaster craft. Visit the branch between 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday to pick up a craft kit containing all of the supplies and instructions needed to complete the craft.

On Thursday, March 24, patrons can make their own face mask holders at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, located at 2105 Hollywood Avenue, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. At the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, library visitors can join the Crochet Academy and learn to crochet their very own mini oven mitts from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. While a small section of cotton yarn will be provided, participants are asked to bring their own “J” hook. Space is limited for the Crochet Academy program.

The David Raines Branch will host a DIY class teaching patrons how to make kitchen utensil holders out of mason jars. The program will take place on Friday, March 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The David Raines Branch is located at 2855 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.

The Atkins and West Shreveport Branches will host DIY programs on Tuesday, March 29 at 10:00 a.m. Patrons of the Atkins Branch, 3704 Greenwood Road, will learn to make gift bags from wrapping paper, while the Pinterest Club of the West Shreveport Branch will teach attendees how to make beaded bracelets. The West Shreveport Branch is located at 4380 Pines Road.

In Vivian and Rodessa, library patrons are invited to visit the library to share their favorite crafts and crafting tips. At the North Caddo Branch, located at 615 North Pine Street in Vivian, library patrons are encouraged to visit the branch on Tuesday, March 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and bring examples or pictures of their favorite crafts. In Rodessa, patrons are encouraged to bring their embroidery machines to the library, share embroidering tips, and see what they can create at the library on Tuesday, March 29 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Rodessa Branch is located at 10093 Main Street in Rodessa.

All National Crafting Month programs at Shreve Memorial Library are free and open to the public. Registration may be required.
