Peewee Pugilists Duke It Out for Navy in Archived Clip

"Learning to dish it out and take it at an early age is Navy tradition," the narrator says.

A black-and-white clip from the 1960s shows children of Naval Academy personnel boxing in front of a cheering crowd during a match in Annapolis.

The clip, which is now in the public domain and uploaded to YouTube this week, features kids ages 5-14 duking it out with boxing gloves in an old Navy tradition, the Navy Junior Boxing Finals' peewee league.

"These bantams are game little scrappers," the narrator said. "Learning to dish it out and take it at an early age is Navy tradition."

According to the official US Navy Boxing website, the 44th annual junior boxing finals took place in 1963. The video shows the 42nd annual match, which would date the video at 1961.

The website also states that the Navy Junior Boxing Program was started around 1919 for the sons of the officers and civilian faculty serving at the Naval Academy.
